Godrano: Ponds, forests and cultural traces
Accommodation in Godrano
Godrano combines a landscape of ponds and forests with cultural traces ranging from church art to museum insights into the agro-pastoral culture of the Palermo hinterland. When planning your trip, you can choose between different interests: nature and trails, or the town’s history and culture.
Forest, ponds and trails
In the Bosco della Ficuzza, Gorgo Tondo is one of the best-known natural or semi-natural ponds; it is also known as Gorgo del Drago di Godrano. The Bosco della Ficuzza, Rocca Busambra, Gorgo del Drago and Bosco del Cappelliere Nature Reserve protects the landscape of Rocca Busambra, as well as forests, natural ponds and the wildlife populations found there. Ponds are therefore part of a protected area whose purpose also includes safeguarding forest landscapes and wildlife.
From Godrano, a forest road climbs towards Gorgo del Drago. If you come from Santa Barbara, you can continue on foot towards Ficuzza and reach the turnoff for the trail to Pulpito del Re from the paved road between Bivio Lupo and Godrano. A trail starts at the Giardino della Memoria in the municipality of Godrano. A hiking trail passes through mature cork oaks and downy oaks before reaching a forest road that leads to the Valle Agnese plateau.
The route to the summit of Rocca Busambra is challenging: few trail markers, difficult trail conditions, a steep climb and a hard-to-follow trail characterize it. It is suitable only for experienced hikers or those accompanied by specialized guides. Check the current route and conditions before setting out; this is particularly important for the summit trail because of its challenging conditions.
Museums, church art and local history
The Museo demo etno-antropologico “Godranopoli” recreates typical settings of agro-pastoral life in the Palermo hinterland, including traditional craft workshops. Information about opening hours and visiting times is available on request. The museum “sulle orme di Padre Pino Puglisi” brings together items documenting Padre Pino Puglisi’s life in Godrano. Check access arrangements for this museum before your visit.
The church of Maria Santissima Immacolata in Godrano houses a large painting above the main altar. A wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception stands against the right-hand side wall of the nave; in the last chapel on the left is a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows at the foot of the Cross. Padre Pino Puglisi’s history is also connected with the church: from 1 October 1970 to 31 July 1978, he was parish priest of Godrano’s parish church, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
Another cultural facet is the “Matrimonio all’Antica” procession: men and women in historic dress parade through the streets of Godrano together with riders and festively decorated Sicilian carts. The event’s format may change. If you are including the procession in your travel plans, check the dates and program.
Tailor your stay to your interests
When choosing accommodation in Godrano, consider the focus of your trip: are you drawn to the protected landscape, its ponds and trails, or are you mainly interested in church art, museums and local history?
