Lercara Friddi combines an archaeological hill on the outskirts of town with churches, baronial palaces, mining history, museums and vibrant festival traditions. Colle Madore and the History of the Town

Colle Madore is a low, barren hill on the outskirts of Lercara Friddi. Its slopes give way to vineyards and farmland, creating a clear contrast with the built-up surroundings. A settlement flourished on the hill from the middle of the 2nd millennium to the end of the 5th century BC. Under the cultural influence of Himera, a small sacred area on the southern slope was also redesigned between the middle of the 6th and the beginning of the 5th century BC.

The town's later history is also reflected in several distinctive buildings. The Chiesa Madre Maria SS. della Neve was built between 1702 and 1721. Its floor plan takes the form of a Latin cross with three naves. The Chiesa di San Matteo was founded by Baron Scammacca at the end of the 17th century and has preserved much of its original appearance. Its sacristy houses a small museum with votive offerings, old missals, sacred furnishings and a silver processional cross.

Churches, Palaces and Museums

The Chiesa SS. Maria di Costantinopoli has a special connection to Lercara's religious history. It was built by local residents to house the sacred image of Maria SS. di Costantinopoli. The image was found by Oliva Beccarella in 1807. The same church also houses a wooden statue dating from 1850, which is carried in a procession on 20 August.

The baronial palaces also tell the story of the local architectural heritage. Palazzo Miceli is considered the first baronial palace in Lercara Friddi. It includes a large portal, a baglio and an adjoining garden with a centuries-old pine tree. The town's baronial palaces are also distinguished by neoclassical wrought-iron grilles and characteristic stone “attuna” corbels. These corbels were made from stone quarried at San Luca.

Villa Rose was the residence of the Rose-Gardner family, who came to Lercara Friddi because of sulfur mining. Villa Rose houses the Archaeological Museum and the Sulfur Museum; the Sulfur Museum is under development. The Museo dei pupi in costume is one of Lercara Friddi's attractions. The Museo etno-antropologico is also among the town's museums.

Mining, Festivals and Special Experiences

At the Parco Minerario in Lercara Friddi, visitors can see on the trails headframes, winches, a still-accessible mining gallery and sulfur springs associated with sulfur mining. The park thus complements the museums and historic buildings with tangible traces of the area's industrial past.

The festival calendar offers several religious and traditional highlights. Holy Week culminates on Easter Sunday with “U'ncontru”, the meeting between the dead Christ, Mary and the Archangel Michael. On 5 August, the Chiesa Parrocchiale Maria SS. della Neve is celebrated with a solemn Eucharistic liturgy and a “snowfall” of flower petals. The Feast of Saint Joseph was announced as a two-day event with religious, traditional and folkloric activities. This refers to an announced event, not a general statement about a permanent program.

Another cultural connection leads to Frank Sinatra. The My Way Festival is a music event honoring Frank Sinatra. The “The Roots of an Italian-American Legend” tour begins at Piazza Duomo with the story connecting the Sinatra family's origins to Lercara. It continues to number 36, considered the last Sicilian residence attributable to the Sinatra family. The tour also includes a reception at a pastry shop with a tasting of Pantofola and “sweet Frank”, as well as the “At the table with Frank” lunch. Dishes that Rosa cooked for Francis are reinterpreted and prepared by a chef.

The local sweet specialty Pantofola also has its own date in the annual calendar. Lercara Friddi hosts the Sagra della Pantofola, a festival centered on the dessert of the same name, which often takes place during the Christmas season. This allows you to discover the town's history not only through its buildings and museums, but also through religious celebrations, music and regional food culture.
