Olive oil as a common thread

The DOP olive oil “Monti Iblei” includes, in particular, the “Gulfi” subzone, which is assigned to the area of Chiaramonte Gulfi. This regional classification is vividly presented at the Museo dell'olio: there, you can see historical techniques and equipment used to produce olive oil from the 17th century to the present day. The exhibits also include a press dating from 1614.

“Olio e nons’Olio” offers an olive oil-themed journey through the aromas and flavors of the oil. Olive oil is also used to make products such as soap and ice cream. At the beginning of December, the olive oil-themed event “Olio e nons’Olio” takes place in Chiaramonte Gulfi. Museums with an individual character

The Casa Museo Liberty is considered a unique exhibition throughout Italy. Each object is displayed in its natural functional setting. On view are valuable objects by artists such as René Lalique, Legras and Calderoni, as well as furniture based on designs by Ernesto Basile and Carlo Zen. The visit is therefore aimed not only at art enthusiasts, but also makes visible how design and everyday function belong together.

The Pinacoteca De Vita consists of works that the De Vita family donated to the community of Chiaramonte Gulfi at the express request of the master (1906–1990). The works on display are connected with the area of the Hyblaean Mountains. The Museo Ornitologico focuses on natural history, with a collection of more than 600 specimens, including rare specimens and others of significance to Sicilian ornithology.

The Museo di Arte Sacra is divided into four exhibition areas: religious ritual, sculpture, painting, and furnishings and ceramic decoration. Another insight into the local culture can be found at the Museo del ricamo e dello sfilato. It is located in an alley next to the historic staircase of San Giovanni, within the medieval urban fabric of the old town. The museum reconstructs the rooms where the Sicilian embroidery technique known as Sfilato is produced and displays more than 200 textile pieces, as well as looms and tools from the 18th century.

Monte Arcibessi and historic trails

In the La Pineta area around Monte Arcibessi, which reaches 906 m above sea level, quarries, springs, natural caves and old trails shape the landscape. Characteristic dry-stone walls line these trails. Alongside the museums, this gives you a second way to access Chiaramonte Gulfi: the town's history is encountered not only in exhibitions, but also in the preserved structures of the surrounding area.

On the Antica Trasversale Sicula, the route follows the Via Selinuntina towards Monte Arcibessi, which is now mapped as part of the Sentiero Ibleo. It then continues along the Strada delle Neviere to the old railway station of Chiaramonte Gulfi. Another documented section of the Antica Trasversale Sicula runs from Giarratana to Chiaramonte Gulfi, passing the prehistoric site of Calaforno.
