Discover Giarratana

Giarratana combines a vivid everyday history, Baroque sacred architecture, prehistoric remains and a distinctive local food culture. If you are looking for more on your trip than a single attraction, you will find different ways here to explore the town’s history and present day.

Living Local History and Baroque Architecture

In the historic centre, the Museo a Cielo Aperto recreates traditional areas of daily life in a way that visitors can genuinely experience. The open-air museum has been designated an Iblean demo-ethno-anthropological cultural asset and is protected accordingly. It therefore offers direct access to the ways of life associated with Giarratana’s history.

A prominent religious building is the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate. The Baroque church was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake during the first years of the 18th century and consecrated on 21 September 1783. Inside, it is divided into three aisles richly decorated with gilded stucco work. It also features a floor of alternating asphalt-stone and majolica sections dating from the 18th century. It is precisely this combination of reconstruction history, spatial impact and handcrafted details that makes the church a worthwhile cultural highlight.

The Palazzo Barone was built by local craftsmen in the first half of the 19th century. Visitors wishing to see the building can do so on weekdays from 10:00 to 12:00; at other times, visits are possible by prior reservation through the tourist office. The mezzanine floors of the Palazzo Barone, also known as the Palazzo della Cultura, are additionally home to the Museo Ibleo dell'Emigrazione. The exhibition offers an interactive journey through the emigration history of the Iblean region, combining literature, film, music, photographs, former newspapers and magazines with characteristic objects.

From Terravecchia to the Villa Romana

Giarratana’s history extends far beyond the Baroque period. Terravecchia is Giarratana’s medieval settlement, which was destroyed by the 1693 earthquake. The Villa Romana di età imperiale dates from the 3rd century AD and is considered a monumental architectural complex with significant mosaics. Kasmenai is regarded as a fortified Greek citadel in the immediate vicinity of Monte Lauro. These different historical layers give your trip several possible focal points, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single era.

The Ipogeo di Calaforno in the Giarratana area is particularly impressive. This underground structure of historical and anthropological interest was created during the Copper Age. It consists of 35 circular chambers that were probably originally arranged in sequence along a linear route. The Ipogeo is one of the most important monuments of its kind in Sicilian prehistory and, at the same time, one of Sicily’s most significant prehistoric sites.

Hiking and Regional Specialities

Giarratana also offers a specific starting point for a trip focused more strongly on movement and landscapes: the 34th stage of the Antica Trasversale Sicula runs from Giarratana via the Ipogeo di Calaforno to Chiaramonte Gulfi. Near Calaforno, it follows forest paths and then joins the Via Selinuntina, which is mapped on this route as part of the Sentiero Ibleo. The stage thus combines a prehistoric site with a designated historic route.

The Cipolla di Giarratana is also part of the local identity: a sweet, white, large-sized onion variety associated with traditional agricultural practices. It is celebrated by the Sagra della Cipolla, held every year in Giarratana on 12, 13 and 14 August. If you plan your trip for this period, you will have a clear regional event to include in your calendar.
