Cannizzara between Cava d'Ispica and the Hyblaean Plateau

Cannizzara combines an impressive landscape with traces of different eras and a regional specialty. The Cava d'Ispica is particularly distinctive: it is a deep valley cut approximately 13 kilometres long in the Hyblaean Plateau between Modica and Ispica.

In the Cava d'Ispica, the cave village of Le Grotte Cadute can still be visited. This means that a specific place to visit remains part of the present-day experience of this historic valley cut. The landscape itself is very well preserved in the regional surroundings of Cannizzara, in the area of Cava d'Ispica near La Larderia, and is characterised by typical Mediterranean maquis. Rock Churches and Evidence of Early Settlements

One of the notable cultural sites is the rock church of Chiesa di San Nicola. It consists of a rectangular chamber measuring approximately 4 × 4.5 metres, with an apse. The remains of five devotional panels are preserved on the walls. Its manageable size makes clear how directly religious use was inscribed into the rock space, without reducing the church to merely a historical designation.

In Contrada Baravitalla, in the northern part of the Cava d'Ispica, lies the so-called Prince's Tomb, the Tomba a finti pilastri. It dates to the Early Bronze Age, to the Castelluccio facies, approximately 2200–1450 BC. A fortified prehistoric village and a necropolis with around fifty artificially created rock tombs were also found in Baravitalla. Baravitalla therefore combines two archaeological perspectives: the fortified village represents a settlement complex, while the necropolis with its artificially created rock tombs represents a burial site. All three findings are located there in the northern part of the Cava d'Ispica, but differ in type and chronological classification.

San Pancrati is located in the northern part of the Cava d'Ispica, in the Modica area, in Contrada Cannizzara, above the Chiesa di San Nicola. Today, only ruins of San Pancrati are visible; its construction is dated to the 5th or 6th century AD. Another rock church is the Grotta dei Santi, which was used by Christian-Byzantine communities. Its walls feature Byzantine painting cycles with approximately 31 figures of saints and bishops. Thus, prehistoric tombs, ruins, and religious rock spaces with different historical backgrounds stand side by side in the surroundings of Cannizzara.

The Modica-Cottoia Fava Bean

Alongside landscape and culture, a distinctive agricultural tradition is also part of the local character. The village of Cannizzara belongs to the traditional production area of the Modica-Cottoia fava bean. It can be eaten fresh after the end of May and is available dried throughout the year.
