The beach stretches for more than 1,800 metres from the small harbour to Punta Pisciotto. The headland of Punta Pisciotto is also home to Fornace Penna, a monument to industrial archaeology. Fornace Penna is more than a striking landmark on the coast. The facility produced bricks and roof tiles for Mediterranean markets, including Malta and Libya. Its history highlights the connection between landscape and work: the building stands on the headland of Punta Pisciotto and recalls the industrial use of the coast. Fornace Penna served as a filming location for the television series “Il commissario Montalbano”.

Work on the ancillary buildings of Fornace Penna is regarded as preparation for the future public use of the complex.

Museum, market and active pursuits

The Museo della Pietra offers a 45-minute tour of stone artefacts that were formerly used in local agriculture. The visit complements the industrial history with an insight into the materials and working life of local agriculture. The cycle path, which connects Sampieri with Marina di Modica, offers another perspective on the surrounding area.

There are also various opportunities for an active day right on the beach. Pedal boats, canoes and windsurfing equipment can be hired at Sampieri’s beach chalets. The beach also has courts for beach tennis and beach volleyball. In summer, the Mercato Campagna Amica takes place every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Via Miramare. Producers offer fresh agricultural products and handcrafted goods there, including sauces, passata, preserves, pâtés, jams and marmalades.

Townscape and travel orientation

Until around ten years ago, Sampieri was a small fishing village with a pretty centre made up of a network of paved lanes along the Lungomare. This history of the town complements the major landscape and industrial features with a more intimate local character.
