Comiso: Aragonese Castle, Churches and Wine

The building's character is enhanced by its local-stone façade and the portal crafted by local stonemasons.

At the Chiesa San Giuseppe, you will find a single-nave interior, seven altars and an underground crypt. Another cultural highlight is the Teatro Naselli. Its Doric-Sicilian portico has pillars and a pediment made of white stone from Comiso. The theater has 264 seats and has continuously offered programs featuring theater, loft and music since November 25, 2000.

Nature, Landscapes and Trails

For trip planning that combines historical impressions with landscapes, consider the Cava Porcaro archaeological and natural park. The park covers approximately 27 hectares, lies between the two Torrenti Cucca and Porcaro, and is located at an elevation of 300 to 400 meters above sea level. An equipped outdoor area with ponds, lawns and play areas is used for leisure, picnics and relaxation. At the same time, the park preserves Christian underground catacombs from the 4th century AD.

The Pino d’Aleppo nature reserve extends across the territories of Ragusa, Vittoria and Comiso. The Pagoda Della Pace offers a different landscape impression: it stands on a hill opposite the plain of Comiso and the former Comiso missile base. The pagoda is 16 meters high and has a diameter of 15 meters.

Those who prefer a longer hiking or stage-trip itinerary can consider the 36th stage of the Antica Trasversale Sicula. It leads from Comiso to Castello di Donnafugata. This also makes it possible to view Comiso as a starting point for a trip that connects cultural destinations and trails, without all experiences having to follow the same day's itinerary.

Literature, Urban History and Wine

The Fondazione Gesualdo Bufalino is housed in a monumental building. It contains Gesualdo Bufalino's private library, a permanent bibliographic and documentary exhibition, and a multimedia area. Piazza delle Erbe, in turn, illustrates the transformation of urban spaces: the square was formerly the city's botanical garden and later a vegetable market. The Terme Romane are a reminder of a Roman-Byzantine thermal complex. Its remains were discovered in the second half of the 19th century while the foundations of the present-day town hall were being excavated.

The Strada del Vino Cerasuolo di Vittoria also offers a unique travel perspective. It is located in the province of Ragusa and extends for approximately 20 kilometers through Vittoria, Comiso and Acate. Along the route, visitors can explore various wineries and agricultural businesses where Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Nero d’Avola and Frappato can be tasted.
