Arenella – Coast, Coves and Sea

Arenella brings together different coastal experiences within a small area: small beaches along the Costa del Sole, rocky coves towards the dunes and excursions on the sea. It is also home to a Greek necropolis listed in Sicily’s inventory of cultural and environmental heritage, as well as various ways of reaching the district by road, public transport or on foot. When choosing accommodation in Arenella, it is therefore worth first asking yourself whether the beach, the coastal landscape, a day of swimming or combining different experiences is your main priority.

Between Small Beaches and Rocky Coastline

The Costa del Sole coastal stretch is characterised by small rocky areas. In between are partly flat rocks with sand, forming small beaches. At the end of Arenella’s sandy shore, a rocky promontory extends to the cliffs of Asparano. As a result, the coast is not just one continuous beach, but alternates between sand, rock and distinctive promontories.

Beach use is also organised in different ways. A large part of Arenella Beach is served by beach clubs with sun loungers and umbrellas. There are also freely accessible beach areas. For the 2026 season, Lido Beach Arenella is also listed as having a JOB beach wheelchair and a walkway. This information refers to the stated season and the listed lido; it is not a general statement about all beach sections.

Coves, Coastal Path and Excursion on the Sea

From Arenella, you can reach hidden rocky coves towards the dunes, spread over more than 1 kilometre and suitable for swimming. This is a different coastal experience from staying on the sandy shore: instead of a single beach section, the focus is on several rocky spots along the coast.

Another option is the 300-metre-long footpath that leads from Costa del Sole along the sea into the Arenella area. Over a short distance, it directly connects the two coastal areas mentioned above along the water. In addition, a half-day sea excursion departs from the small harbour of Ognina. It goes to the Gulf of Asparano and Arenella Beach. During this excursion, it is possible to swim in the crystal-clear sea at Arenella Beach, where the seabed is sandy. The experiences therefore clearly differ in format: the coastal path and rocky coves can be explored from land, while the excursion provides access from the water.

Culture and Orientation for Choosing a Location

A Greek necropolis in Arenella is listed in the inventory of cultural and environmental heritage of the Sicily region. It adds an archaeological dimension to the coastal attractions, without implying that it can currently be visited.

Arenella can be reached via the coastal road towards Isola and Arenella or via the SS115, following the signs to the district. The district is also served by direct urban connections to the coastal localities. There is no railway station within sufficient proximity to Arenella Beach.
