Discover Ferla: Churches, Festivals and the Landscape of the Monti Iblei

Ferla combines impressive churches, lively festival traditions and the distinctive landscape of the Monti Iblei. Among olive, carob and almond trees, vineyards and dry-stone walls, a destination emerges that combines cultural discoveries with excursions into nature and regional delicacies. Churches with different architectural histories

The 18th-century Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine was built at the beginning of the new urban layout according to a typological scheme widespread in eastern Sicily and particularly common in the Iblean towns. Its tower-like façade is divided into two architectural orders: Doric and Ionic. The church is accessible to people with disabilities.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano can be reached on foot from the town center known as “i quattro canti”. The starting point is the intersection of Via Umberto and Via Vittorio Emanuele. From there, follow Via Vittorio Emanuele 230 meters south to the level of house number 20; the walk takes about four minutes.

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio has a Greek-cross floor plan, designed immediately after the 1693 earthquake. The octagonal dome contains a central fresco depicting the triumph of Saint Anthony, created by Crestadoro. Friezes, additional frescoes and stucco complete the decoration of the dome. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Gesù also houses a valuable wooden crucifix by Giovanni Pintorno da Petralia Soprana, also known as Frate Umile, created in 1633.

Landscape and paths through the Monti Iblei

The area around Ferla features an agricultural Iblean landscape. Olive, carob and almond trees stand alongside vineyards, while dry-stone walls structure the scenery. For a more active exploration, the 30th stage of the Antica Trasversale Sicula from Ferla to Sortino leads through the heart of the Monti Iblei. The stage passes along the important settlement site of Pantalica and partly follows the Trazzera that led from Ferla to Pedagaggi. Thus, the same route brings together landscape, traces of historic settlements and a traditional connection between towns.

Festivals and events throughout the year

At noon on Easter Sunday, Ferla celebrates u Scontru, the meeting of the statues of the Mother and the risen Son. The San Sebastiano festival takes place on July 20. In August, Cardacia follows, a summer version of the Sicilian carnival featuring dances, allegorical floats and masked groups. From the end of August to the beginning of September, Lithos takes place on the grand staircase of the Capuchin monastery. The national event series is dedicated to popular, acoustic and contemporary music. The dates therefore represent distinctly different reasons to travel: religiously rooted customs, a fixed date in July, a colorful event in August and music marking the transition from summer to early autumn.

Typical products of the Iblean area are part of Ferla’s regional character. Among other things, you can try olive oil, black and green olives, cheese, mushrooms, sausage and cured meats, as well as hazelnuts and almonds.
