Fontane Bianche

Fontane Bianche combines an approximately 1,200-meter-long white-sand beach with unusual traces both beneath and above the sea.

White sand, gently sloping sea, and accessible beach facilities

The sea at Fontane Bianche beach slopes gently and is considered suitable for children of all ages. In summer, canoes and pedal boats are available on the beach. Free and paid parking spaces are available for those arriving by car. The beach resorts also have ramps for people with disabilities. Lifeguards assist people with disabilities on the beach. These specific features make this stretch of coast particularly appealing when relaxed days of swimming and straightforward daily planning are priorities when choosing accommodation.

Numerous freshwater springs emerge from the seabed beneath the beach. This explains a distinctive feature that one would not expect at an ordinary sandy beach: here, the sea and the seabed are closely connected to the area's local history. The best-known sinkhole is located at the terminal section of the Cavagrande del Cassibile and presumably contributes to feeding the numerous underwater springs along the coast from Fontane Bianche to Lido di Avola.

Underwater finds and traces of a long coastal history

Fontane Bianche also offers notable subjects for families interested in culture. During several underwater dives in the area's waters, an oar and a ship's cannon were found. The Fontane Bianche–Punta del Corvo area contains sea caves and remains of vanished caves. Prehistoric fauna, including hippopotamus bone fragments, as well as a Paleolithic stone industry were found there.

A protohistoric and classical necropolis is also recorded in Fontane Bianche. A necropolis is a historical burial ground; the Byzantine catacombs form another recorded part of the cultural heritage. The Punta del Cane promontory is topographically part of Contrada Grottazze. The contrada forms its northern section, where burial chambers carved into limestone are located.

The historic Tonnara complex also tells of the coast's former multifaceted use. It comprised a church, accommodation for tax collectors, warehouses, stables for transport animals and several dairy cows, as well as a fishing facility. Fontane Bianche is also home to a public skate plaza, considered the first public skate plaza in Sicily. Maritime history, archaeology, and contemporary leisure activities thus stand side by side.

Market, local products, and getting your bearings locally

The Mercato del Contadino takes place every Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. from July to September. At Lido Fontane Bianche, hot and cold dishes made with local products are offered daily at lunchtime. These two offerings give a stay different accents: the market focuses on a fixed early-evening appointment, while the lido offers an opportunity at lunchtime to enjoy hot or cold food with a local connection.

For travel planning, it is also known that Fontane Bianche railway station has one track for passenger traffic.
