Priolo Gargallo: Discover Saline di Priolo and Thapsos

Priolo Gargallo combines an important nature reserve with traces of the Bronze Age and historic buildings. The Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve is particularly prominent: 216 bird species have been recorded there, and the adjoining Penisola Magnisi extends the natural area into a connected habitat for breeding and migratory birds. There are also observation hides, paths with special facilities and places where the history of the surrounding area is directly linked to the landscape.

Saline di Priolo and Penisola Magnisi

The Penisola Magnisi forms a natural extension of the Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve. Penisola Magnisi and Guglia di Marcello are among the areas shaped by historical and natural features that are closely connected to the Saline di Priolo. Both are located within the Natura 2000 site ITA090013.

Observation hides and equipped paths

The Saline di Priolo Nature Reserve has five observation hides. Two of them extend into the marshland and allow visitors to observe the wildlife.

More than 400 metres of the paths in the Saline di Priolo are equipped for people with disabilities. This explicitly documented provision is a distinct aspect of the area and complements the observation facilities. This makes it possible to explore nature not only through the number of recorded bird species, but also through the available paths and viewpoints.

Thapsos, Guglia di Marcello and Torre Magnisi

Priolo Gargallo is home to Thapsos, a Bronze Age village and necropolis. The site therefore represents a very early historical layer of the region. Guglia di Marcello is an important historical and archaeological area in Priolo Gargallo and is also one of the areas closely connected to the Saline di Priolo.

Another prominent landmark is Torre Magnisi. It was built in the first decade of the 19th century during the British protectorate in Sicily. The tower is truncated-conical in shape and belongs to the Martello type. Torre Magnisi thus complements the Bronze Age traces of Thapsos with a structure from a much later period.
