Cornino – Coast, Trails and Monte Cofano

Cornino combines an impressive coastal landscape with trails, historic sites and unique insights into the culture of Sicily. Monte Cofano and the Coast of Cornino

The cliffs of the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve provide a habitat for, among others, Bonelli’s eagles, peregrine falcons and ravens. The landscape therefore has not only a distinctive form, but also special natural-historical significance. The protected area can be reached via the Baia di Cornino or via Custonaci. The Baia di Cornino itself is Custonaci’s ancient seafaring village and thus forms an important reference point for the coastal landscape. The Baia di Cornino includes Cala Bukuto, also known as Cala Buguto. The picturesque bay lies within the Baia di Cornino in the Custonaci area and is the largest sandy stretch of coast in the region. Coastal Trails with Different Destinations

Several named trails are available for active days. The Sentiero Italia CAI MTB includes an approximately 4 km coastal loop around Monte Cofano. The trail continues to the Baia di Cornino, thereby combining mountain and coastal perspectives in a described route. The Sentiero del mare follows a different course: it begins in Borgo Cornino, passes the Torre di San Giovanni and the Cappella del Crocefisso, and continues to the Torre della Tonnara di Cofano. The hiking trail to Baglio Cofano also begins in Cornino and has a medium level of difficulty. This information clearly distinguishes it from a simple visit to the town and helps you categorise the type of excursion you are looking for. Baglio Cofano was established in the immediate vicinity of Cornino in the 17th century as a small rural settlement. Rural History and Unique Experiences

The Grotta Mangiapane is located nearby and has been designed as an open-air museum. The village houses display rooms and facilities that recreate traditional rural life in Sicily. Another cultural connection is the nativity play “Presepe vivente di Custonaci – La Natività e i Mestieri Tradizionali”, which has taken place in the Grotta Mangiapane during the Christmas season since 1983. The “Stella Maris” statue is also located in front of the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve, at a depth of 13 metres in the waters off the protected area. Guided underwater excursions are available in the Baia di Cornino, including to the underwater areas at the Scoglio dello Scialandro, the wreck of the Kent, the wreck of the Pavlos V and the underwater caves in the Gulf of Macari. Cornino thus offers an unusual combination of coastal trails, rural culture and maritime sites.
