Salt Pans and Landscape Around Trapani

The Saline di Trapani e Paceco Nature Reserve covers 986 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Trapani and Paceco. Guided visits are available year-round by prior reservation. Salt production there is based on seawater, wind power, solar heat and low rainfall. This means that the landscape can be experienced not only as a natural area, but also as the result of a traditional production process.

Museums with a Regional Focus

The Museo del Sale is housed in a 17th-century baglio with an attached windmill. It preserves historic tools used by salt-pan workers and black-and-white photographs, and is located along the Via del Sale cultural and tourism route. The Museo Regionale Agostino Pepoli has a different focus. It is located in the rooms of the former Carmelite monastery next to the Santuario dell’Annunziata and presents the development of visual culture in the Trapani area. Its holdings include works made of coral, majolica, gold and silver, as well as nativity art. It also contains a collection of objects created in the 17th and 18th centuries by coral masters and sculptors from Trapani.

Towers, Coastal Paths and Historical Traditions

The Mura di Tramontana promenade runs from Piazza Mercato del Pesce to Bastione Conca. The Torre di Ligny was built in 1671 to reinforce Trapani’s coastal defences and offers views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Aegadian Islands and the coast as far as the slopes of Monte Erice. The Torre della Colombaia was used as a prison until 1965; its construction was attributed to Hamilcar Barca in 260 BC during the First Punic War. The Museo Civico Torre di Ligny houses an archaeological collection relating to the Trapani area. In addition, the Fontana di Saturno commemorates a structure dating from 1342.

Religious history also shapes the cityscape. The Santuario dell’Annunziata was built between 1315 and 1332, and its main building was completely rebuilt in 1760. The Processione dei Misteri has been held for more than 400 years and takes place every year on Good Friday. It comprises 18 groups of figures and two simulacra. On Good Friday, the Sacri Gruppi leave the Baroque Chiesa del Purgatorio at 2 p.m. and process through Trapani’s main streets for almost 24 hours without interruption. San Liberale was built in the 17th century by coral fishermen after a miracle. An organ in Trapani was completed in 1842.
