Castelvetrano: Selinunte, Culture and Coast
Castelvetrano combines significant evidence of ancient Greece with historic buildings, a distinctive local bread culture and diverse coastal landscapes. When planning your trip, the main question is therefore whether you would like to focus on archaeology and urban history, on nature and beaches, or on combining several of these impressions.
Selinunte: Archaeology with its own way of visiting
The Archaeological Park of Selinunte is located in the municipality of Castelvetrano. Selinunte was one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily. The park covers approximately 270 hectares and includes sandy ground, unpaved paths and trails that are not level everywhere. This extent and terrain are part of the character of the site: here, you are not visiting a compact collection of individual buildings, but an extensive archaeological area. Tourist trains connect the main areas of the Archaeological Park. They are not included in the admission price and may not be fully accessible. On June 21, 2026, the entrance on the Triscina side was also reopened with an opening walk; from there, the Gaggera sanctuaries can be reached. When choosing how to visit, it is therefore not only the age of the ruins that is of interest, but also the specific access side and how you would like to explore the site.Historic Centre and Museums
The Chiesa di San Domenico stands in the historic centre of Castelvetrano. The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta was built from 1520 onwards and has a basilica-style layout with three naves. An urban-planning feature is the Sistema delle Piazze: the three main squares, Garibaldi, Umberto I and Cavour, form a connected group because they are linked and directly adjacent to one another. Smaller individual attractions also add to the character of the city. The Teatro Selinus is an elegant neoclassical building in the heart of Castelvetrano. The Fontana della Ninfa was built in 1615 and commemorates the completion of the Bigini aqueduct, which brought water to the city. The restored Renaissance building Palazzo Majo houses the Selinuntino Civic Museum. It preserves archaeological heritage from the ancient Greek city of Selinunte. The Santuario di Demetra Malophoros is considered one of the most important cult complexes in Greek Sicily. The Ethno-Anthropological Museum of Rural Life in Castelvetrano offers a different perspective on the region, documenting rural life in Sicily.Coast, Dunes and Underwater Landscapes
The Foce del fiume Belice e dune limitrofe nature reserve is part of Castelvetrano’s natural side. It protects an approximately 5-kilometre stretch of coast between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi. The beach in the nature reserve is a nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta. Near the mouth of the Belice River, small coastal wetlands have formed within the geosite described there. Triscina di Selinunte has beaches with fine, golden sand. The seabed off Triscina attracts many divers, who explore its varied and richly structured underwater landscapes. The possible holiday experiences therefore differ considerably: this is not only about spending time on the beach, but also about the sea, coastal nature and archaeological attractions in the surroundings of the Selinunte experience.Black Bread and Local Tradition
The Sagra del Pane Nero di Castelvetrano reached its second edition in 2025. The focus is on Castelvetrano black bread and flour made from the ancient Tumminìa wheat as symbols of the local agri-food tradition. This topic complements the monuments and landscapes with a tangible culinary perspective on the city.Discover More Places
