Scauri is known for hot springs, a multifaceted history and a distinctive lava coast. Hot springs and a viewpoint in the Kúddia di Scauri

The Acque Calde San Gaetano reach temperatures of 40 to 50°C through secondary volcanism. Before the water reaches the sea, it is collected in small pools that were created by people in ancient times. The path to the springs begins at the “La Vela” restaurant in Scauri.

A different view of the landscape can be enjoyed in the upper area of the Kúddia di Scauri, just before the summit. There is a viewpoint there for panoramic photographs and watching the sunset. The springs and the viewpoint represent two different ways of experiencing Scauri: one through the unusual warmth of the water, the other through the view across the landscape.

Traces of the late Roman settlement

A late Roman settlement from the 5th century AD is located in the Bay of Scauri. The village made use of the bay’s natural terraces; some walls were carved directly out of the lava block. The local production and sale of “Pantellerian Ware” ceramics were also associated with this site. For your stay, this provides a historical perspective that considers not only individual ruins, but also how the terrain was used and the settlement’s craft tradition.

The history of the bay also includes a medium-sized shipwreck at the entrance to the harbour of Porto di Scauri. It lies on sandy ground at a depth of 6 to 10 m and sank around the end of the 5th century AD. On 7 August, a procession for San Gaetano da Thiene also takes place in Scauri.

Lava coast and diving sites

At Punta Tre Pietre and the Faro di Scauri, the shore consists of lava rock; the water becomes deep quickly there. When diving from a boat in front of these two points, you can see moray eels, corals, Sferococchi and Axinella colonies. At Porto di Scauri, a boat-based current dive leads across a sandy underwater area and along a rock wall to a depth of around 40 m. Porto di Scauri is protected from the Levante, Tramontana and Maestrale winds.
