Campobello di Mazara combines an impressive cultural history with an agricultural landscape and the long beach of Tre Fontane. Ancient traces and a museum in the baglio

One of the most striking cultural sites is Cave di Cusa. It supplied the large capitals and columns of Temple G. The quarry was used from the 6th century BC until the end of the Greek city; the Punic conquest led to the abrupt cessation of stone extraction. Its exceptional state of preservation makes it possible to examine all the stages of ancient stoneworking. Cave di Cusa is therefore not only a historic site, but also an illustrative insight into the production of monumental architectural elements.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in Baglio Florio, in Contrada Cave di Cusa. Its collection includes objects from local rural occupations, including fishing, carpentry, blacksmithing and rope making. Baglio Florio was inhabited until the end of the 19th century by agricultural workers who cultivated the surrounding estate year-round or seasonally. A visit to the museum complements the ancient history with a look at the everyday life of later generations.

Historic buildings in the town

The Chiesa di Santa Maria al Presepe is a neoclassical basilica with three naves and a rectangular apse with a shell-shaped vault. Inside is a carved crucifix by Frate Umile da Petralia (1580–1639). The Torre dell’Orologio combines references to classical Renaissance and Sicilian-Norman architecture. Construction began in 1858, and the exterior decoration was completed in 1877.

The area’s coastal history is also part of its character. The Tonnara di Torretta-Granitola was one of the most flourishing and significant tuna fisheries in the Mediterranean region. Until the 19th century, the Torre di Tre Fontane was part of Sicily’s coastal defense and observation system. Today it is inaccessible and partially collapsed. This difference between historical significance and present condition should be taken into account when selecting places to visit.

Landscape, olives and sea

Campobello lies on a plain at an elevation of 100 meters above sea level. The landscape is predominantly agricultural: extensive fields with centuries-old olive trees alternate with vineyards, citrus groves and almond orchards. The local importance of olive cultivation was also evident at the second edition of the Nocellara Expo in Campobello di Mazara. In 2024, it promoted Nocellara del Belìce DOP, along with its olive oil and table olives, and included 22 oil and table olive producers.

For a day by the water, Tre Fontane beach is an excellent choice, stretching for more than six kilometers. The beach offers clean, clear and shallow water; Tre Fontane is considered suitable for families with children. The Bandiera Verde award was held from 2013 to 2023 and should therefore be understood as referring to a past period. Campobello di Mazara is also connected to a network of roads and motorways.
