Alcamo: Discover Culture, Nature and the Sea

Alcamo combines historical evidence, nature on Monte Bonifato, Sicilian wine culture and the nearby Gulf of Castellammare. When choosing accommodation in Alcamo, you can focus on the old town, experiences in the countryside or excursions to the coast. The town’s various facets are particularly evident in the following discoveries.

Historic centre with art and religious history

The Museo di Arte Sacra is located in the historic centre. Notable churches include the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, built around 1332. Its 38 ceiling frescoes by Guglielmo Borremans were created between 1735 and 1737. The Chiesa dei Santi Paolo e Bartolomeo also represents the wealth of Alcamo’s art history: elaborate stucco work and magnificent frescoes are regarded as the highest expression of Baroque in Alcamo. The church also houses a painting of the eponymous saints from 1701 by Giuseppe Felice of Trapani. The Santuario di Maria SS. dei Miracoli was built in 1547 and remodelled at the beginning of the 18th century. In May, it is a pilgrimage destination on the occasion of the festival in honour of Maria Santissima. The religious tradition also includes the statue of the Madonna dei Miracoli, created by Lorenzo Curti in 1721, which is carried every year on 21 June during the procession for Alcamo’s patronal festival. The Museo MACA in the monumental complex of the Collegio dei Gesuiti and the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali Multietnici Fausto Cannone offer further insights into the town’s history. The latter is housed in the former church of San Giacomo De Spada and contains 232 musical instruments. Before visiting, you should call 0924 24592 to check whether the museum is open. The Teatro Cielo D'Alcamo was built in the mid-19th century and was originally called Teatro Comunale Ferrigno. The Biblioteca Sebastiano Bagolino preserves an important collection of old books as well as handwritten and printed works.

Monte Bonifato and traces of the past

The Bosco d'Alcamo nature reserve protects a densely forested area on Monte Bonifato. Due to its location and elevation, it is an important resting place for migratory birds. The area also includes the north-western tower of Castello di Ventimiglia. Its origins date back to the Arab period; in 1397, it was restored and reinforced by the Ventimiglia family. For a walk through the historic centre, the free “Cielo Narrante” web app is a good option. It can be used without downloading anything and accompanies you on a tour with ten stops where places, stories and legends are presented. This allows you to discover the town not only through individual buildings, but also through the connections conveyed by its stories.

Coast, wine-growing landscape and regional wine

The nearby Alcamo Marina is located on the coast. There, the Gulf of Castellammare is home to an approximately 3-kilometre-long beach; various water sports can also be practised. In Contrada Forgia are the remains of an ancient kiln dating from between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Sea lilies grow on sandy dunes along the coast. The terrace of Piazza Sebastiano Bagolino offers views of the Gulf of Castellammare and the surrounding area of Alcamo. This area is characterised by vineyards where Alcamo DOC wine is produced. Castello dei Conti di Modica is home to the Enoteca Regionale della Sicilia Occidentale, thereby combining history with the region’s wine profile.

Guidance for choosing your location

Piazza della Repubblica is a terminus for urban and regional bus routes. There is also a ground-level car park there; the historic centre can be reached on foot in a few minutes from the car park. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore take your preferred focus into account: the Museo di Arte Sacra and the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali Multietnici Fausto Cannone are located in the historic centre; nature experiences are associated with Monte Bonifato, while the beach, water sports and coastal landscape are connected with Alcamo Marina.
