Castellammare Del Golfo – Coast, Nature and History
Castellammare Del Golfo represents different sides of Sicily: sandy and pebble beaches, a striking coastal landscape, museums and historic buildings.
Beaches and Coastal Location
For a stay with a variety of beach days, there are several specific options to choose from. Cala Petrolo is a sandy and pebble beach near the center of Castellammare Del Golfo. La Plaja is a short distance from the center and is described as a golden sandy beach. Swimming, beach volleyball, water sports and activities organized by the beach clubs are possible there.
Cala Campana is located about 900 meters from the center of Castellammare. The beach can be reached on foot or by car; opposite the Hotel Punta Nord, a staircase leads down from the road. These different locations provide objective guidance when choosing where to stay: you can prioritize proximity to the town center, a golden sandy beach or another coastal spot with the stated access and route options.
Nature Between the Gulf and the Mountains
The Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro consists of a stretch of dolomitic limestone cliffs in the western part of the Gulf of Castellammare, on the eastern slope of the Capo San Vito peninsula, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, between Castellammare Del Golfo and Trapani. In addition to the landscape, there is also a special way to experience the area: guided tours can be booked.
Another prominent landscape feature is Monte Inici, which rises to 1,064 meters. It is the second-highest peak in the Trapani Mountains and belongs to the municipal area of “Complesso dei Monti di Castellammare del Golfo”. The surrounding area therefore ranges from the coast to a clearly defined mountain region.
Museums, Churches and Maritime History
The museum complex “La Memoria del Mediterraneo” is located in the castle. It is divided into four sections: the Museo dell’acqua e dei mulini, the Museo delle attività produttive, the Museo archeologico and the Museo delle attività marinare. The Museo Archeologico displays, among other things, anchor stocks and transport amphorae from Roman times. This means that a museum visit can also be explored through specific evidence of the maritime and historical past.
The history of the landscape also includes Borgo Cusenza. The Cusenza family lived in the borgo year-round until around 1920/30. In the waters off the Tonnara di Scopello, the Soprintendenza del Mare has established an underwater archaeological trail. The monumental complex of the Tonnara di Scopello is located in Castellammare Del Golfo.
The churches also have their own distinctive features. The Chiesa Madre, called “La Matrici” by the Castellammaresi, stands on a rocky tuff spur 25 meters above sea level. The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario is said to have been built around 1100 during the Norman period and stands near the castle. The feast of the Chiesa della Madonna della Scala is celebrated every year on September 8 with a procession.
