Castle, Museum and City History

Partanna combines medieval architecture, prehistoric evidence and vibrant local traditions within a compact thematic area. The Castello Grifeo di Partanna is particularly characteristic: the medieval building stands on the slopes of a hill around which the town developed and is considered one of the best-preserved castles in western Sicily. A date of 24 April 2026 was announced for the public reopening of Castello Grifeo.

The Museo civico della preistoria del Basso Belice is located inside the castle. The collection mainly displays finds from the excavations carried out in Contrada Stretto since the 1980s, as well as from necropolises in the Belìce area. The exhibits include prehistoric pottery, vessels in the Naro–Partanna style and pieces from the Bell Beaker culture. Thus, the same historic building focuses both on the history of the castle and on much older traces of human settlement.

Chiesa Madre and Sacred Art

A second focus is the Chiesa Madre, one of Partanna's most representative architectural monuments. Baron Baldassarre Grifeo designed the church in 1536; it was not consecrated until 1676. Inside, you will find sculptures by Francesco Laurana, stucco work by Serpotta and a wooden organ carved by Natale Pugliesi. These various works make the Chiesa Madre a destination in its own right for anyone wishing to combine architecture, sculpture and artistic craftsmanship in Partanna.

Archaeology in Contrada Stretto

The Parco Archeologico dello Stretto is located about three kilometres east of Partanna. The “Cranio Trapanato” was discovered there. According to the available studies, a surgical procedure was probably performed on this skull about 5,000 years ago; the patient lived for at least one year. This statement is explicitly a scientifically based supposition, but it gives the archaeological site a distinctive human dimension.

The structures there, too, should not be understood from just one perspective: they are attributed both a water-related and a cultic function. Contrada Stretto therefore complements the collection at the Museo civico with an archaeological site where questions about everyday life, rituals and early technical abilities come together.

Madonna della Libera and Local Traditions

The Santuario della Madonna della Libera stands in Contrada Montagna, a modern reinforced-concrete building with an elliptical floor plan. It was built by the architect Baldassare Antonini and stands on the ruins of a 19th-century church dedicated to the Santuario, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 15 January 1968. Here, the present-day architecture and the memory of the earlier building create a clear contrast between modern form and historical rupture.

The Madonna della Libera festival takes place on the first Sunday in October. At that time, the Santuario is a destination for pilgrimages by residents of Partanna and by believers from surrounding towns. In 2026, the Sagra della Cipolla Rossa di Partanna added a culinary highlight: visitors could sample numerous specialities made with red onions and get to know and buy typical products from the Valle del Belice directly from the producers.
