Termini Imerese is situated not far from the capital of Sicily. It will take you only half an hour to get to Palermo. The name of Termini means thermal springs in Italian, so it is clear that Termini Imerese is a famous health resort. The Italian name of the resort came from the Latin name Thermae Himerenses, which means Hot Springs of Chimera. So, most of the tourists come to Termini Imerese to improve their health.
This place has been known since the time of Ancient Rome. The ruins of the aqueduct remind the tourists of that time and are considered to be a visit card of the resort. Ancient Romans were not the first settlers here. The first settlement was built here by the Greeks in the 7th century B.C.
There are about 25000 inhabitants in modern Termini Imerese. The town is divided into two parts: Termini Bassa (the Lower Town) and Termini Alta (the Upper Town). Most of the interesting places are situated in the Upper Town, but the elements of modern infrastructure can be seen in the Lower Town.
The historical centre of Termini Alta is rather compact. All the historical buildings and monuments are situated close to each other. In the heart of the Old Town is located San Nicola di Bari Church in baroque style in Piazza Duomo. It was built in the 15th century. Behind the Square there is a belvedere of Piedmont Prince, from which opens a wonderful view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. If you go downstairs you will see Villa Palmieri, which was also built in the baroque style. There is a park and a subtropical garden near it. In the vicinity of the resort there is a Castle of Caccamo on a high cliff from which there is also a wonderful view of the valley of the river St. Leonardo. You should surely visit the cradle of the modern resort, which consists of the ruins of the ancient Greek colony Imera and the ruins of the Victory Temple.
Besides lots of sights Termini Imerese is famous for its carnival, which is considered to be the most beautiful on Sicily. It is usually held at the end of January - at the beginning of February. During the carnival participants and guests are offered famous dishes of Termini Imerese: lasagna, pasta with cheese Ricotta and ice-cream. The carnival is organized in the Old Town.
