Eating and drinking are two main entertainments on Sicily. The Sicilians are experts in these things. Perfect Mediterranean cuisine with a lot of seafood, white wine and olive oil is traditional there. Certainly, they have pasta and pizza, famous sweetmeats, trattories and pizza shops, where tourists can eat and drink with pleasure.
Trattories are like snack bars, which can be found everywhere on Sicily. Usually, a trattory belongs to one family and while visiting a trattory you can get acquainted with a way of life of ordinary people on Sicily without rich drapery and luxurious arm-chairs. In any trattory you can see old posters, bottles of olive oil, Christmas cards and, sometimes, life pictures, which are not of great value, but make tourists’ mouths water.
Trattories are everywhere, even in small places of Sicily. It is rather easy to understand, which one is better. You should watch the locals. The best is usually the local trattory, where local fishermen and farmers have meals. Pay attention to the Granduca trattories in Taormina, Monte San Ginliano in Erice, Don Camillo in Syracuse and La Grotta in Carmello in Acireale.
