Lampedusa between sandy coasts and marine conservation

Lampedusa combines bright sandy beaches, protected coastal landscapes and a surprisingly diverse island culture. There are sandy beaches along the east and southeast coasts, while Cala Pulcino offers several grottoes on the southern side. Those who want to combine different experiences will find nature trails, water excursions, diving destinations, historical sites and local traditions here. This means you can primarily choose your accommodation according to whether you want to focus on the coast, activities, culture or a combination of these.

Beaches, coves and protected nature

Spiaggia dei Conigli is located in the Riserva Naturale Isola di Lampedusa, as well as in the Special Area of Conservation ITA040002 and the Special Protection Area ITA040013. Improvements and pedestrian-oriented design are planned for its access route. The protected areas give this stretch of coast a clear connection to nature. In addition, Lampedusa Turtle Rescue has been working since 1990 to provide care and rehabilitation for injured sea turtles.

The sea itself is also part of the island’s character. The protected marine area Area Marina Protetta Isole Pelagie encompasses Lampedusa and protects diverse marine and coastal habitats. These include, among other things, Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. Smaller coastal destinations offer different highlights: Cala Greca is a very small cove with white sand, while Porto N’Tone is a very small beach with fine, white sand. Scoglio del Sacramento can be viewed from above via a path that begins on the right after the end of the road from Ponente.

Hiking, cycling and experiences on the water

In the Riserva Naturale Isola di Lampedusa, trails run along the coast and through the Valloni, allowing you to observe the flora and fauna. One trail begins at Cala Stretta, follows the coast for part of the way and offers views of the Vallone di Cala Galera. Another connects sections of old paths with former military tracks and opens up views of the Grotta Tabaccara. Hiking trails also lead to the summit of Monte Rosso and to Monte Nero on Lampedusa. Those who prefer to explore the island by bicycle can tour Lampedusa in a day.

A boat tour around Lampedusa takes three to four hours and offers a different perspective on the coast. Lampedusa also provides opportunities for diving and snorkeling. The particular advantages mentioned are clear water, diverse seabeds and rich flora and fauna. The underwater statue Madonna del Mare can be reached on an easy dive at a depth of 14 meters. This allows you to choose between a coastal hike, a cycling tour, a boat trip and time underwater, creating different daily rhythms.

Museum, procession and island cuisine

The Museo Archeologico delle Pelagie offers a chronologically arranged tour through four rooms. The exhibits include remains from a Roman fish-processing facility in Cala Salina. The Festa di Maria Santissima di Porto Salvo, held every year on September 22, provides a vibrant connection to local tradition. The procession begins at the Santuario della Madonna di Porto Salvo and passes through the island’s streets.

The Porta d’Europa is located between Cala Spugne and Porto Vecchio. The monument commemorates people who died while attempting to reach the coast by sea. The maritime character is also present in the cuisine: shrimp, lobster and seafood are additionally added to fish couscous in Lampedusa.

Spiaggia della Guitgia is connected to the town by public transport. This specific connection complements the island’s landscape and cultural contrasts with a note on mobility.
