Favara – Culture, Art and Landscape

Favara brings together cultural discoveries, contemporary art, Mediterranean landscapes and traditional specialities. The town thus offers different ways to experience Sicily: you can explore historical collections and buildings, discover an unusual cultural complex or get to know the landscape to the northwest of the town.

Culture in the Library, Museum and Buildings

An important cultural venue is the Biblioteca Museo “Barone Antonio Mendola”. It combines a library and a museum and houses around 14,000 volumes, including many historical and scientific works. The Museo Civico “Antonio Mendola” in the library includes, among other things, an ornithological collection with more than 100 bird specimens. This places the book collection and natural history collection side by side in a shared cultural venue.

Favara’s architectural history is also shaped by several clearly identified landmarks. The Castello dei Chiaramonte was built around 1280 by Federico II Chiaramonte. The Chiesa di Santa Rosalia, also known as the Chiesa del Purgatorio, dates from the 17th century. The Chiesa del Rosario has been declared a national monument, while the Chiesa di San Nicolo dates from the 16th century. The Necropoli Sicana also belongs to the town’s earlier history: it extends across two rocky hilltops and comprises forty-three narrow shaft tombs.

Art, Community and Landscape

The Farm Cultural Park showcases another side of Favara. It transformed abandoned buildings and forgotten streets into a vibrant centre for art, education and community life. The park includes the Seven Courtyards, a connected courtyard complex with small buildings, Arabic-style gardens and cultural spaces next to residents’ homes. It is precisely this combination of the built environment, garden forms and cultural use that makes the site an independent part of Favara’s cultural profile.

The landscape aspect is represented by Montagna Caltafaraci northwest of Favara. The mountain is 531 m high and rich in flora and fauna typical of the Mediterranean region, as well as archaeological remains. Nature and history do not appear separately here: the landscape is characterised both by Mediterranean habitats and traces of earlier eras.

Tradition and the Art of Confectionery

A special culinary tradition is associated with Agnello Pasquale. According to tradition, the nuns of the Collegio di Maria in the “Batia” district of Favara were the first to prepare this speciality. The Sagra dell’Agnello Pasquale takes up this theme with events devoted to the art of confectionery, exhibitions and tastings. In this way, a local festival tradition adds another cultural perspective on Favara to its museums, buildings and art venues.
