Discover Racalmuto: Culture, Festivals and Sicilian Specialties
Racalmuto combines Sicilian literature, historic buildings, religious festivals and a distinctive cuisine. Here, you can alternate between cultural experiences in the town, special processions, routes through the countryside and culinary discoveries. The town therefore also offers several clearly distinct focal points for trips catering to different interests.
Between the Castle, Theatre and Literature
The Castello Chiaramontano is located in the present-day town centre, on the northeastern edge of Piazza Umberto I. Access is through the main gate on the piazza. Originally, the complex extended across three evenly arranged levels. Two large round towers define the Castello; after extensive interior restoration, the one on the right was converted into a viewing point. Another cultural centre is the Teatro Regina Margherita. It was built between 1870 and 1880 and has 350 seats, two tiers of boxes, a horseshoe-shaped gallery, an orchestra pit and a large stage. The theatre was designed by Dionisio Sciascia, a student of Filippo Basile's school. The connection with Leonardo Sciascia can be seen in several places. The Fondazione Leonardo Sciascia is housed in a power station built in the 1920s and later decommissioned by ENEL. It preserves an important collection of the writer's correspondence. Casa Sciascia is his parents' home and the place where he wrote his first books. After years of vacancy, the house was reopened to the public as a cultural and documentation centre dedicated to Sciascia's work and Sicilian literature. Contrada Noce, in turn, was the place Leonardo Sciascia chose for writing and reflection.Churches, Festivals and Historic Routes
The Santuario Maria SS. del Monte was built between 1736 and 1747 and has two entrances. One of them leads via the Scalinata di lu Munti, a flight of steps dating from the late 18th century. The Cathedral of S. Maria dell’Annunziata preserves important paintings by the painter Pietro D’Asaro, who was from Racalmuto, as well as a historically significant parish archive. On 20 June 1620, the cathedral was definitively elevated to the status of Racalmuto's mother church. The Festa Maria SS. del Monte traditionally begins in the second week of July and lasts five days. It includes a historic procession with young people on horseback wearing 15th-century costumes, travelling from the Castello Chiaramontano to the Madonna's sanctuary, as well as the procession of the Madonna's image, known as “u triunfu”, on a cart drawn by two oxen. The Good Friday liturgy includes a crucifixion rite with a procession from the Santuario Maria SS. del Monte to the local Golgotha. Other regular dates complement the religious and communal calendar: during the last three days of the second week of August, from Friday to Sunday, the Madonna del Carmelo festival includes public events in the square, including a watermelon festival. The Christmas novena takes place from 16 to 24 December and includes nativity scenes, music and traditional songs. Founded in 1836, the Circolo Unione is also known as the Circolo della Concordia.Countryside, Getting There and Local Specialties
Racalmuto is a stage on the Magna Via Francigena trekking route. Cycling makes it possible to explore the surrounding countryside and the numerous provincial roads connecting Racalmuto with towns in the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta. For a different historical perspective, there is the Castelluccio Svevo: the small fortress was built in the 13th century on the orders of Frederick II and displays features of Hohenstaufen castles. It lies 720 metres above sea level, seven kilometres from the historic centre, and offers views of the surrounding landscape. Getting there can also be planned in different ways. Racalmuto can be reached via the S.S. 640, the Strada degli Scrittori. The town also has a railway station on the Agrigento–Caltanissetta line. The race track, inaugurated in July 2005, is likewise one of the documented sites within the municipality. Local identity includes taralli with lemon flavouring and sugar icing, as well as Mpignulata, which is considered a typical dish of Racalmuto and is historically associated with the agricultural working tradition. Only fresh fruit from the Contrade Raffo, Saraceno, Garamoli and Roccarossa is used for the lemon granita. The “cubaita racalmutese” is considered a local specialty and differs from the “cubaita” found in other parts of Sicily. Further destinations in the same region can be found under Fiumenaro, San Biagio Platani, Montallegro, Cianciana, Realmonte, Siculiana, Ribera and Aragona. For the overarching travel overview: Agrigento.
