Monte Conca and the Unique Landscape Around Campofranco

Campofranco combines a multifaceted local history with a landscape in which the gypsum karst of Monte Conca plays a central role. This creates a destination where natural formations, archaeological traces, churches and living traditions come together within a compact thematic area. Particularly striking is the Riserva Naturale Monte Conca nature reserve. It was established to protect important caves in Messinian gypsum and surface karst features of considerable scientific and natural-history significance.

The Monte Conca karst system is one of the most extensive and deepest karst systems in the gypsum of Sicily. Its total spatial extent is approximately 1,869 metres, with an elevation difference of about 130 metres. The system includes the Inghiottitoio di Monte Conca, with a cave development of 520 metres, a negative elevation difference of 108 metres and four vertical shafts. Access to the Riserva Naturale Monte Conca is described via a 1.5-kilometre-long path that runs from kilometre 11.2 of Strada Provinciale 24 to the Inghiottitoio di Monte Conca.

The history of the landscape is also visible: an archaeological area with a Bronze Age necropolis is located on the summit of Monte Conca. The Area Archeologica Serra del Palco in Campofranco is a Neolithic settlement. If you would like to consider nature and early settlement together, two different chronological layers of local history lie side by side here, without the karst appearing merely as a scenic backdrop.

Museums and Churches with Specific Historical Traces

The Museo di Storia Locale preserves more than 500 documents in its display cases. On view are original religious, historical and geographical documents from the 15th to the 20th century. For your planning, the museum's opening hours are listed as Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Several churches complement this historical picture with individual, clearly dated details. Santa Maria dell'Itria was originally the chapel of the baronial palace. The church has a valuable floor made of glazed tiles bearing the coat of arms of the Lucchesi Palli family from 1836. The Chiesa Madre was founded in 1575 by Giovanni Dei Campo and dedicated to the patron saint bearing the same name. It contains a stone-carved coat of arms of the Del Campo family from 1575 and a memorial plaque from 1580.

The Church of San Francesco, popularly known as San Calogero, was founded in 1573 by Francesco Del Campo. It houses the 17th-century painting “Andata al Calvario”. Campofranco itself was founded in 1573 by Baron Giovanni Del Campo, with royal permission, as a small hamlet.

San Calogero, Bread Figures and Historic Paths

The Festa di San Calogero takes place in Campofranco on the last Sunday in July. This tradition includes the residents of Campofranco walking barefoot at least once in their lives from their home to the Church of San Francesco. The Festa di San Calogero also includes the Sagra dei Pupi di Pane. Large loaves of bread are baked in the shape of body parts that are said to have been healed through the intercession of the saint. This combination of religious practice and crafted bread culture is one of the most unusual described features of the town.

For excursions of historical interest, the Regia Trazzera Borbonica from Campofranco to Grotte is also relevant. It is still partially visible west of SP 115 and Monte Campanella. Another pilgrimage route begins at the Riserva Naturale Monte Conca and ends at the Brecciafiorata of Acquaviva Platani. On the first day, short, continuously ascending stages lead from the Gallo d’Oro River to Campofranco. In this way, natural surroundings, local history and the tradition of religious pathways are connected in a single route.
