Church, Customs and Past Ways of Life

A historic starting point is the Chiesa Madre of Montedoro. It was built in 1645 by Mariano de Lucia. The last restoration took place in 1996 and returned the church to its original forms and colours.

The Casa Museo “I mestieri scomparsi” displays objects, pictures and reconstructions of old craft workshops. These include a tailor’s shop, a barber shop and a carpenter’s workshop. At the same time, it commemorates vanished professions such as blacksmith, knife grinder, town crier, manure or fertiliser collector, carter and storyteller. The Casa Museo “La novena e il presepe” is dedicated to the Christmas novena and the nativity tradition. In the Casa Museo “La settimana santa”, the “Laments of Good Friday” can be heard, a distinctive form of intangible cultural heritage.

The Casa Museo “Come eravamo” is located in an old house built in the first half of the 19th century. The Casa Museo “Latifondo e lotte contadine” commemorates the rural struggles of the post-war period: the efforts to achieve a fairer distribution of agricultural produce, the redistribution of undeveloped or poorly cultivated land, and the break-up of feudal estates. Overall, the Case Museo offer a tour through old Sicilian “Dammusi”, focusing on customs, everyday objects and traditions.

Monte Ottavio and the History of Mining

The Casa Museo “Grotta di Beniaminu – Il brigantaggio” is located in the so-called “Grutta di Beniaminu”, a cave on Monte Ottavio. Its presentation of brigandage includes inscriptions, photographs, folk poems, small objects and copies of ransom letters. The cave actually served as a refuge for brigands between the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Museo della Zolfara “Angelo Petix” is located at the entrance to the Parco Urbano di Montedoro on Monte Ottavio, near the Nadurello mine, the oldest mine in Montedoro and the one that operated for the longest time. The museum houses the permanent exhibition “Zolfare e zolfatari di Montedoro, civica raccolta di testimonianze etnostoriche”, featuring photographs, reconstructions, minerals and mining tools. Anyone interested in the connection between local history and working life will find a particularly tangible introduction here to the sulphur-mining tradition.

Planetarium and Observatory

The Montedoro Observatory is located on Monte Ottavio, west of the built-up area. It houses an astronomical Newton-Cassegrain telescope with a 600 mm primary mirror. The astronomical offering also includes the “Margherita Hack” Planetarium, with a dome 7.0 metres in diameter and 50 seats. The digital planetarium can also project full-dome films.

The observatory organised astronomy courses as well as daytime and evening guided tours for schools, libraries and the general public. In this way, astronomy complements the historical collections with a view of the sky and creates a distinct focus for varied travel planning.
