Between Domed Architecture and Miniature Karst

Santa Caterina Villarmosa combines impressive sacred architecture with an unusual landform. The Chiesa Madre brings together architectural history and art: construction of the building, with a single-nave layout, a Latin cross plan and a large dome, began in 1710, was completed in 1779 and opened to the public in 1784. Art in the Chiesa Madre

The Chiesa Madre houses large paintings by the painter Antonino Guastaferro, who was born in Santa Caterina Villarmosa. They include “L’Addolorata”, “San Gaetano da Thiene” and “San Francesco di Paola”. Guastaferro’s altarpiece “La pietà”, dating from 1764–1765, is also on display there. Together with the building’s history, they offer a concentrated insight into the town’s sacred art. Another historic church is the parish church of Santa Maria delle Grazie on Via Roma, which is dated to 1600.

Contrada Scaleri: Landscape as an Open-Air Museum

A completely different focus is the Riserva Naturale Geologica di Contrada Scaleri. Contrada Scaleri is a geomorphological open-air museum associated with the slow karstification caused by water on exposed rocks. Surface karstification creates rare small-scale landforms, including meander-shaped grooves that represent miniature karst systems.

For orientation on site, the documented connection is particularly specific: The Riserva Naturale Geologica di Contrada Scaleri can be reached from the town centre via the Regia Trazzera “S. Caterina Villarmosa–Alimena”. The festival had already taken place in Santa Caterina Villarmosa for its fourth edition. The 2024 edition included the gastronomic event “Sapori e Specialità Locali”, organised by Pro Loco on 10 August in Piazza Marconi, Via Roma and Piazza Garibaldi. As a past event, this is a specific example of the connection between local gastronomy and public cultural life, not an indication of a current events calendar.

In the wider regional area, Cozzo Scavo shows settlement traces from the 5th and 4th centuries BC. This means that the historical perspective extends beyond the churches and present-day event venues.
