Misterbianco: History, Carnival and Campanarazzu

Misterbianco combines visible traces of antiquity with vibrant traditions and the memory of a lost town center. Those interested in cultural history, local festivals and artisan-made costumes will find several different starting points for planning their own trip. The perspective ranges from archaeological remains to places where the history of Misterbianco is still told and passed on today.

Archaeological Traces in the City Area

The Museo di Arte Sacra is located in the crypt of the Chiesa Madre of Misterbianco. A reservation by telephone or email is required for visits. This makes the museum a clearly defined cultural attraction, distinct from the freely accessible historical traces found throughout the city area.

The remains of a Greek fortification and a Roman building are located in the Erbe Bianche area. Both are under direct archaeological protection. Further Roman remains can be found in Piazza della Resistenza, where the remains of Roman baths are located, as well as on Via Garibaldi, with the remains of a Roman aqueduct.

Carnival, Workshops and Local Festivals

The Carnival of Misterbianco is rooted in ancient traditions and is associated with the “Costumi più belli di Sicilia.” Its costumes are created in local artisan workshops, which work on them for a year. The Museo del Carnevale is located in the Stabilimento Monaco, complementing the festival tradition with a dedicated place for exploring the costumes.

The festival of Madonna degli Ammalati is also closely linked to the history of Misterbianco. Its roots reach back into the history of the town, whose old center was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Etna in March 1669. For the period from September 11 to 13, 2026, the municipality is planning a street-food area on Via Madonna degli Ammalati as part of this festival. This date is identified as a municipal plan and not as an event that is already taking place.

Campanarazzu and the Memory of the Old Town Center

The park and oak grove of Campanarazzu survived the eruption of 1669. For the residents of Misterbianco, they preserve the memory of the old town center. The Campanarazzu path runs through the Madonna degli Ammalati district from Misterbianco to the end of Via Campanarazzu.

The historic objects in this area also include a painting from the old Chiesa Madre of Campanarazzu. It was probably located there next to the baptistery and dates from the first half of the 17th century. The Antica Chiesa Madre of Campanarazzu cannot currently be visited because exceptional maintenance work is ongoing. As a result, the available information about this historic site differs significantly from the possibility of a regular visit.
