Contessa Entellina combines archaeological evidence, a distinctive cultural identity, religious art and wine traditions. Archaeology and a distinctive landscape

The archaeological area of Entella has a fortification wall dating from the 6th century BC, which was modified in the 4th century BC. Excavations also uncovered a public granary dating from the 4th to 3rd century BC. These two remains represent different aspects of the ancient site: the wall points to its fortifications, while the granary provides insight into public food supplies.

The landscape includes the rocks of Rocca di Entella. They provide a habitat for bats and nesting birds of prey. The archaeological surroundings therefore also have a natural-history dimension that differs from the historical sites.

Churches, abbey and Albanian roots

The Chiesa di SS Annunziata e San Nicolò is a Greek-Byzantine parish church. Its interior is decorated with icons, an iconostasis, mosaics and Orthodox liturgical vestments. For a culturally focused stay, it therefore provides a concrete counterpoint to the archaeological sites of Entella.

The Abbazia di Santa Maria del Bosco also has a clearly documented history. The earliest historical record dates from June 21, 1308. At that time, the bishop of Agrigento granted the pre-existing hermitage permission for the church; in 1309, the bishop consecrated the church and declared it a basilica. Visits to the abbey are possible by prior reservation; the request must be submitted at least two days in advance. This requirement is part of the specific visit planning and should be taken into account before the intended date.

The community’s origins further shape its cultural character: Contessa Entellina was founded by Albanian groups who came from the Greek island of Andros. To this day, the town preserves the language, customs and traditions of its region of origin.

Festivals between faith, wine and regional products

Local traditions are also reflected in recurring religious events. On Epiphany, a ceremonial blessing of the water takes place at the public fountain known as “biveri.” On September 8, a solemn procession sets out from the Chiesa di Maria SS della Favara, with the gilded wooden Madonna on her vara. People carry her through the streets.

Another side of the town can be discovered at the Terre Sicane Wine Fest. The event features wine masterclasses and numerous tasting stalls. A food offering highlights typical local products, while live music and performances complement the wine activities.
