Gratteri: Madonie Park, Forests and Culture

Gratteri is located in the northern part of Madonie Park and combines a striking mountain landscape with a townscape steeped in history. Approximately 2,600 hectares of the municipal area lie within the park’s boundaries. The amphitheatrically arranged town centre offers panoramic views stretching from the Gulf of Cefalù to the Gulf of Palermo. Paths through forests and mountain landscapes

Two different routes are particularly interesting when planning your excursions. The path to the ruins of San Giorgio Abbey begins in the upper part of Gratteri, near the castle ruins, and leads through oak forests to the abbey ruins. The abbey was founded in 1140 by Duke Ruggero. Its ruins attest to the only settlement in Sicily of the Premonstratensian Order of the Reformed Augustinians. Anyone wishing to combine nature and history will find a route here whose destination is not only a landscape but also a clearly identified historic site. Grotta Grattara offers a different landscape experience. It lies about 300 m from the settlement of Gratteri, on the lower slopes of Pizzo di Pilo, at an altitude of over 1,000 m. From the San Nicola plateau, the cave can be reached via a winding, relatively easy-to-walk path through a pine forest. Local folklore associates Grotta Grattara with Befana, who is called “a vecchia strina” here. Thus, an oak-forest path to abbey ruins and a pine-forest path to a cave associated with local traditions represent two discoveries with very different character.

Churches, processions and local traditions

The town centre and its churches also reveal different facets of the area’s history. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea houses an Ecce Homo attributed to Frà Umile da Petraia. The Madrice Vecchia dates from 1350; its bell tower houses seven bells. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Gesù is described as one of the oldest churches in Gratteri. A special form of local tradition is the Good Friday procession “a Sulità”. It moves through the town in a single file, with torches or lanterns. The Sagra della “Vastedda fritta” is also considered one of the events held in August in Gratteri. Both examples show that the town’s cultural dimension is expressed not only in historic buildings but also in religious and communal customs.
