Geraci Siculo: Culture, Trails and Madonie Views
Geraci Siculo combines impressive historical landmarks with routes through natural and cultural landscapes. Between castle ruins, churches, viewpoints and traditional festivals, it is a destination that brings together a wide range of interests. Those looking for accommodation can therefore tailor their stay to their preferred focus: art and religious history, walks and nature trails, or the scheduled dates in the events calendar.
Castles, Churches and Living History
The ruins of Castello dei Ventimiglia preserve sloping tower corners, loopholes, a Moorish window and arches belonging to underground passages. There are also cisterns, some empty and others filled with rubble. At Ventimiglia Path, a described route begins at Castello di Geraci Siculo and ends at Chiesa dell’Annunziata.
Another historic building is Bevaio della SS. Trinità: the rectangular structure is 20 metres long and has two side wells made of hewn stone. It was commissioned by Marchese Simone Ventimiglia. Chiesa di Santa Maria La Porta was built in 1496. Its single-nave layout follows the shape of a Latin cross; the church also contains a painted marble polyptych from the 16th century, attributed to Giuliano Mancino and his workshop as well as Antonio Vanella.
Smaller religious sites add further character to the area. Chiesa di San Giuliano is attached to the Benedictine nuns’ monastery, has a single nave and is decorated with ornamental stuccowork by Francesco Alaimo from 1749. Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano is located in the San Cusimano area; its pointed-arch portal indicates the chapel’s great age. The Museo di Arte Sacra can be reached through the sacristy of Chiesa Madre. From there, access leads into the crypt, where the church treasury is displayed.
Museums and Trails for Curious Explorers
MUSeBArch is housed in a 17th-century monastery of the Capuchin friars. It presents the local agro-pastoral and artisan culture through reconstructed work processes and depictions of folk and religious festivals. The reconstructed areas include shepherds’ living spaces. A death mask made of wax and its corresponding plaster cast from the 19th century are also on display.
For those interested in nature and culture, the municipality offers free guided tours, available by prior reservation through its tourism service and the “Qui Parco” office. They lead to nature trails as well as art-historical and monumental routes. Another described route is the Geraci Siculo–Castelbuono stage of the Via dei Frati. It runs from Piazza del Popolo to Bevaio della Trinità and then continues to the rural chapel of San Cosimano.
Via dell’acqua is a nature hiking trail focused on visits to the Marcati, wetlands and oligomineral springs. The protected-area network also includes the ZSC Querceti sempreverdi di Geraci Siculo e Castelbuono. Alongside the historical sites, this places water, woodland and traditional landscape use at the centre of the experience.
Views and Special Places
At Salto del Ventimiglia, a viewpoint opens up over Geraci Siculo’s eastern valley; the view extends as far as the slopes of Mount Etna. A steel-and-glass platform structure projects approximately three metres beyond the edge of the wall. On the ground floor of the adjoining municipal library, there is an information centre with a multimedia station and artistic terracotta reliefs depicting the history of the town.
Punto panoramico di Piazza S. Antonino also offers views of Geraci Siculo and the wooded Madonie area. These different viewpoints complement the trails and museums with a landscape perspective, without requiring culture and nature to be considered separately.
Festivals with Set Dates and Strong Traditions
Several events shape the course of the year. The patronal feast in honour of San Bartolomeo is celebrated every year on 24 August and includes a procession of San Bartolo and San Giacomo through Geraci Siculo. The feast in honour of Maria SS. Annunziata traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in July; during the celebration, the painting of the Annunciation is carried through the historic centre.
The traditional feast of the SS. Crocifisso is celebrated on 3 May. At its centre is a wooden statue in Chiesa di Santa Maria La Porta. During the procession, worshippers take turns carrying the statue on their shoulders, and some walk barefoot. Children wear crowns made of braided branches and call out “PANI E PARADISU, MISERICORDIA SIGNURI”.
Giostra dei Ventimiglia is a historical-medieval re-enactment held every year during the first week of August. The programme includes processions in 14th-century costumes, knightly games, simulated falconry, medieval cuisine, music, medieval representations, performances by high-class horses and cultural gatherings. On a smaller scale, A Carvaccata di Vistiamara is also held annually. It includes a religious ceremony, sounds and songs, as well as tastings of dairy products made exclusively by the participating shepherds.
