Discover Ragusa

Ragusa combines an old town fully designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto” with a culture of churches and museums. Particularly impressive is the contrast between Ragusa Ibla and Ragusa Superiore: Two historic centers, different architectural histories, and numerous specific sites make the city a rewarding destination for anyone wishing to get to know Sicily through architecture, art, and local history.

Ragusa Ibla: Churches, Palazzi, and Late Baroque Details

Ragusa Ibla has more than fifty churches and numerous palazzi. Notable buildings include the Duomo di San Giorgio, a masterpiece of Sicilian late Baroque by Rosario Gagliardi. Inside is a monumental organ made by the Serassi-Allieri company of Bergamo in 1881. The cathedral therefore offers not only a significant façade but also a specific historical detail that enriches the visit with a piece of musical and craftsmanship history.

Santa Maria delle Scale is also one of Ragusa’s oldest and most interesting churches. Three surviving chapels have late Gothic cross-ribbed vaults of Catalan origin and decorative stone reliefs. Those who want to discover not only grand buildings but also individual architectural elements and older traces during their tour will find a particular focus here.

Ragusa Superiore and the City’s Museums

The Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista was built after the 1693 earthquake in the new district of Ragusa Superiore, in the late Baroque style of the reconstruction period. Its interior features gilded capitals, Corinthian columns, a dome, and broad naves. In the Museo della Cattedrale San Giovanni Battista, housed in the piano nobile of Palazzo Garofalo, the tour leads through seven exhibition rooms. Exhibits include reliquaries, goldsmith’s work, liturgical vestments, bishops’ insignia, liturgical texts, paintings, and statues.

Among the museum’s special objects is the “Arca Santa” reliquary of Saint John the Baptist, made in 1731. The Museo archeologico Ibleo takes a different approach: It offers self-guided visits with explanatory panels and admission. The collection is divided into six chronologically ordered sections and covers the historical periods documented in the Ragusa area. This allows visitors to discover sacred art, urban history, and archaeological evidence in different museum formats.

A Route Between the Historic Centers

A walking route runs beneath the three bridges through the Vallata Santa Domenica and connects Ragusa’s two historic centers. For current planning, however, it is important to note that the Vallata Santa Domenica is currently inaccessible due to ongoing works. These works are intended to improve access and extend the routes. The route described therefore forms part of the city’s history and spatial orientation, but it is not currently available as an accessible connection.

Nature and Local Tasting Experiences

In the wider regional area around Ragusa, the Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio nature reserve in the municipalities of Ragusa and Scicli protects the mouth of the Irminio River and the coastal ecosystem. A protected landscape therefore complements the city’s historical highlights, without equating the natural focus with the cultural sites within the city.

The Accademia della Terra offers another facet. There, guided cultural tastings of historic national and international cheeses are available with wine, beer, and preserves. This offering combines culinary discovery with explicitly guided interpretation and has a different focus from a self-guided museum visit.
