Butera combines a cultural tour through the town’s streets with archaeological traces, historical building phases, wine and sweeping views across the landscape. Particularly distinctive is Butera Poetica: in the historic center, the shutters of shops are transformed into works of art. Art and History in the Town Center

The Museo civico di Butera focuses on archaeology. It is known for its collections of bronze and, above all, ceramic finds. Another historical focal point is the Castello Arabo Normanno di Butera. Its building history comprises several phases: it began during the Arab period in the 9th to 10th centuries and continued under Norman rule in the 12th century.

The remaining interior spaces of the Castello di Butera house the Museo Archeologico. Thus, the historic castle complex and archaeological display are combined in a way that opens up two different approaches to the past. This picture is complemented by the Nekropole ellenica del Piano della Fiera. It dates back to the Bronze Age and was later used during the Greek and Roman periods.

Another exceptional site is the Dolmen di Butera. This megalithic stone altar is one of the few of its kind in Sicily. Together with the collections of the Museo civico, the Museo Archeologico and the necropolis, it creates a broad spectrum: from individual finds and a historic fortress complex to prehistoric and ancient sites.

Views, Landscape and a Geological Special Case

The Belvedere is the most important viewpoint in Butera’s historic center. From there, views extend across the surrounding landscape, cultivated fields and the sea. The site thus adds a landscape accent to the museums and historic buildings.

The Sito del Gelasiano near Monte San Nicola is geologically noteworthy. There, the site includes a type section selected to define the boundary between the Pliocene and Pleistocene and, in particular, the base of the Gelasian. Alongside art and history, this offers you another scientifically oriented perspective on the development of the landscape.

Wine as a Distinctive Aspect of a Visit

The local wine culture is also among the documented experiences in Butera. A tasting tour at Principi di Butera ends at the Enoteca. There, you can sample three typical wines from the estate. The visit therefore combines a guided tasting with a clearly defined conclusion at the Enoteca.
