Sortino: Pantalica, Puppet Culture and Town History
Accommodation in Sortino
Sortino brings together a town perched high above the surrounding area, the archaeological landscape of Pantalica and a multifaceted local cultural history. At 424 metres above sea level, the town sits on a rocky terrace in the eastern part of the Hyblaean Mountains plateau. Pantalica, puppet theatre, traditional beekeeping and local specialities offer a variety of points of interest. This gives you a choice of archaeology, town history, museum themes and food culture when planning your trip.
Pantalica and the History of Sortino
The Pantalica necropolis, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within the territory of Sortino. It comprises more than 5,000 tombs carved into the rock, most of which date from the 13th to the 7th century BC. The necropolis is therefore a major archaeological site in the area. Remains from the Byzantine period have also been preserved there, including the foundations of the Anaktoron, the so-called Prince’s Palace. The tombs from the earlier period and the Byzantine building remains offer different historical points of reference.
Sortino’s layout tells another story: the town was rebuilt much higher up on Cugno del Rizzo hill. Its rectangular street grid is shaped by two perpendicular main streets, Corso Umberto I and Via Libertà . They intersect at the octagonal Piazza Quattro Canti, which remains the town centre. If you are interested in a town’s spatial layout, you can look here at how clear axes, a geometric square and a central function come together.
Puppet Theatre, Collections and Craftsmanship
The Museo civico dell’opera dei pupi preserves the puppet collection of Don Ignazio Puglisi; the museum is housed in a former Franciscan monastery. More than 30 puppets appear in various scenes, and the collection also includes a distinctive puppet theatre. Figures, theatrical scenes and the theatre itself offer different facets of the collection: alongside the individual puppets, their staging also comes into focus.
The Antiquarium del medioevo is housed in a former Carmelite monastery. Its chronological tour ranges from 63 prehistoric finds from Pantalica to objects recovered during the clearance of old Sortino, destroyed in the 1693 earthquake. The ethnographic collection complements this timeline with objects from agro-pastoral culture—agriculture and animal husbandry—as well as tools and machines used to work stone, wood and iron. In the former monastery’s garden, visitors can take part in educational workshops on stoneworking. Archaeological finds, everyday culture and craftwork thus come together as distinct themes.
The Casa dei Nonni showcases local beekeeping: it recreates a traditional beekeeping workshop from Sortino with historical and anthropological accuracy and is designed as a permanent exhibition on traditional beekeeping. Alongside the tools and materials in the Antiquarium, it places the history of a specific local craft at the centre of attention.
Feast Day and Local Specialities
The Feast of Saint Sofia in Sortino is celebrated every year on 10 September. The most spectacular moment is considered to be the “Sciuta”, when the processional float and the relic of Saint Sofia are carried out of the Sanctuary of Santa Sofia. If the feast is important to your trip, its annual date is a useful point of reference for planning.
Pizzolo Sortinese is a savoury local focaccia: the surface is seasoned with oil and oregano, then the bread is cut open through the middle and filled with various ingredients as desired. Honey is also part of the local food culture and has traditionally been produced in the Sortino area. According to local accounts, its long production tradition dates back to beekeeping knowledge said to have been introduced during the Arab occupation of Sicily. This cautious historical interpretation links today’s regional honey with a traditional explanation of its origins.
