Randazzo: Lava Stone, Mount Etna Trails and Sicilian History

Randazzo lies on the northern slopes of Mount Etna and showcases its unique connection between volcanic landscape, history and Sicilian urban space right on site. The Chiesa di San Nicolò dates from the 13th century. Inside it is a marble statue of San Nicola di Bari by Antonello Gagini, created in 1523. The Chiesa San Martino provides a different architectural accent with its preserved 13th-century bell tower. Its paired, two-coloured bifora and trifora windows immediately catch the eye.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria also makes the use of volcanic rock visible: its exterior is made entirely of black lava-stone blocks. Inside is the Byzantine fresco Madonna del Pileri. The Museo archeologico Paolo Vagliasindi is housed in the Castello svevo, a tower incorporated into the town wall. It displays finds from the 6th to 4th centuries BC, most of which come from Sant’Anastasia in Randazzo. The Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali complements this historical focus with the Priolo ornithological collection. It comprises around 2,000 specimens representing approximately 400 different species. A palaeontological hall also displays fossils, minerals, rocks, shells and remains of Pleistocene fauna.

Mount Etna Trails and Landscapes Around the Town

The trails in the Mount Etna area around Randazzo cross old and more recent lava flows. They lead to Monte Spagnolo and its beech forest, as well as to the Grotta del Gelo. The Sentiero naturalistico Burrò is a named visitor trail and part of this landscape experience. Trails 717 and 717A provide access to Mount Etna from the volcanic slope facing Randazzo. This offers a choice of different named destinations and routes, without reducing the landscape to a single viewpoint.

Another natural setting lies around Randazzo: in Alcantara River Park, numerous trails and paths follow the bends of the river and lead to scenic places, some of them with a wild character, such as the famous gorges. The connection towards the town is also relevant when choosing a location. The Circumetnea railway connects Randazzo directly with Catania.
