Montemaggiore Belsito – Basilica, Palazzi and Hiking Trails

Montemaggiore Belsito connects the northwestern slope of Monte Roccellito with impressive sacred architecture, historic palazzi and several distinctive hiking trails. The town is located in the western Madonie Mountains and thus offers a starting point for a wide variety of discoveries: insights into cultural history in the town center, traditional dishes and customs, as well as paths through forest and mountain landscapes.

Basilica and Palazzi in the Townscape

A central landmark is the Basilica of Sant'Agata. It has been a minor basilica since 1802 and is the mother church of Montemaggiore Belsito. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; three naves and a large central dome define the church building. Inside is a painting by Vincenzo La Barbera from 1628. It depicts the crucified Christ with the holy souls in purgatory.

The palazzi, too, tell of different periods of construction. The Palazzo del Principe di Baucina was built around 1866 to a design by the architect Ignazio Greco. The Palazzo Saeli dates from the early 20th century and is designed in the Liberty style. It borders Piazza Basilica on one side. Those who seek not only individual sights but also architectural contrasts when exploring the town will find sacred architecture, representative palace architecture and a later stylistic period within a compact thematic area.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

Montemaggiore Belsito is also connected to several long-distance and local trails. Stage SI V14 of the Sentiero Italia leads from the town through the Bosco del Cardellino. It crosses the Selletto Fondo Soprano Pass at an elevation of 823 meters and runs along the northern slope of this mountain. The trail thus creates a direct connection between the town, the forest and the mountain landscape.

On the Via Francigena Madonie, you can distinguish two consecutive stages: the 16.7-kilometer route leads from Caccamo to Montemaggiore Belsito, followed by a 22.7-kilometer stage continuing to Caltavuturo.

Further trails explore the surrounding area at a local level. Hiking Trail 501 begins just outside the town on Provincial Road 7 between Montemaggiore Belsito and Alia. Via a footpath, it leads to Case Granza, where the reserve's visitor center is located. Hiking Trail 503 runs through the forest and reaches Lake Bomes. Thus, in addition to the longer routes, trails with a clearly named destination in the immediate surroundings are also available.

Traditions and Typical Dishes

The local culture includes communal meals and religiously influenced customs. The tradition of the Virginieddi involves an elaborately prepared meal that, according to historical customs, is first served to children and then to adults at long tables in the homes. At the head of the table stands a carefully decorated altar dedicated to Saint Joseph.

The traditional meal in honor of Saint Joseph, the craftsman and patron saint of working people, is repeated on May 1. For several years now, the traditional table has been organized in Piazza Roma for everyone who would like to sample the typical dishes prepared for this occasion. Alongside the trails and buildings, these dates and customs give a stay its own culinary and communal focus.

For travel within the wider area, bus services operated by Trasporti SAIS and AST are cited as an available option covering the entire area.
